Experience and equipment
I first took an interest in “real” photography in 1996, when I bought a second-hand Olympus OM-10 for the French bike ride. I then acquired an OM-2SP second-hand, which worked perfectly apart from the TTL flash metering.
I also bought the Zuiko (Olympus’s lens “brand”) 50mm f/1.8 that came with the OM-10, a Vivitar 28mm f/2.8 and the most excellent Zuiko 100mm f/2.8 short telephoto lens. I used to have a no-name 80–200mm f/3.5–4.5 zoom, but that fell apart and it really didn’t compare with the 100mm for image quality.
In 1999, I bought a small Canon Ixus M1, as I found I was taking way too long to compose informal snapshot photos. In 2002, as APS development prices got crazy, digital camera prices came down and my PC was up to the task, I sold the Ixus and bought a Nikon Coolpix 2000 for snapshot use.
The convenience and free incremental image cost of digital is a big plus for me, so I’ve sold off the Olympus kit on eBay, and bought a Minolta DiMAGE A1.
