British courts are being told to dole out harsher penalties for poor driving (PDF). In an interview primarily focusing on the cost of international text messaging, BBC Radio 4’s PM programme interviewed eminent linguist (and txt advoc8) David Crystal and discussed texting whilst driving which is explicitly called out in the new guidelines as being dangerous.
He said something along the lines of “it’s taken a few years for us to realize it’s dangerous to text whilst driving”. I’m certain this isn’t the exact meaning he intended.
The actual fact is that it’s taken us a few years to realize that there are people out there stupid enough to not realize that texting whilst driving is dangerous, and it therefore needs banning in law.
Juggling whilst driving is also dangerous, but there’s no explicit law against that — yet…
